Abstract

The Regenerative Triennium (1923-1925), which characterised the first stage of the Dictatorship of General Miguel Primo de Rivera, gave way to a corporatist authoritarianism which, following the example of Mussolini's Fascist Italy, sought to militarise the social strata. One of the main architects of this policy of subjugation was the Minister of Grace and Justice, Galo Ponte Escartín, who was engaged in a legal battle to subdue the Administration of Justice and the Judiciary. In 1928, he presented a Bill which equated legal professionals with civil servants, but the Bar Association of Badajoz led the defence of the Principle of Independence and Freedom of Toga, joined the rest of the corporations and became one of the instruments aimed at undermining the foundations of the Regime.
